ARTIST STATEMENT
In my artwork, you will see a different perspective of how negative and positive spaces interact. As a child, I was fascinated with the look of negatives on film strips. From early childhood, I believed I developed the eye of a photographer without a camera. As you follow the geometrical shapes and patterns of my artwork, you will find a common theme. Allow your eye to travel, look at the sharp edges drawn by a precision knife which speaks to the development of my style. My work has been described as irregular, eccentric, different, unusual and unconventional. I will continue to look at everyday images in this unorthodox way. Art has allowed me to speak feelings that can't always be said through words. I hope I can inspire young people to know that art has a voice.
Art is not what I see...but what I make others see. -- Karen Y. Buster

Welcome
Art is subjective. It can speak volumes without a word being uttered. A painting might be “beautiful” to one person and “ugly” to another—it may make one person laugh, and another person cry, but the material object remains unchanged. The beauty of art is that it doesn’t judge, doesn’t criticize or ostracize, but it can impact the viewer in ways they never imagined.
Such is the art of Karen Y. Buster. Her art is inspired by a life lived fully. She draws inspiration from family, friends, life and her time spent in New Orleans.
Her signature technique combines a series of geometric patterns that initially look like pen and ink, but upon closer inspection, the viewer realizes that the work is comprised of a series of intricate cuts, meticulously crafted using nothing more than a sharp blade. Each piece is unique and the outcome is awe inspiring.
